Description

This 2006 film dramatizes the 26-year career and personal life of English abolitionist/social reformer William Wilburforce (1759-1833), who led the fight to end the slave trade in the British Empire. Facing stiff opposition in the British Parliament as well as challenges to his health, friendships, and political prospects, a devout Wilburforce nonetheless persists in his cause and eventually finds a way to weaken, then abolish this inhumane practice.  The film also reveals the origin of the famous hymn that provides its title.  Stars Iaon Gruffudd, Romola Garai, Benedict Cumberbach, Rufus Sewell, and Albert Finney.
