Description
From different parts of the world but all critically acclaimed, the five prolific authors we will read this fall offer readers a variety of themes. Grief, loss, society vs. duty, loyalty, betrayal, fate, and power are some of the central ideas in novels by these celebrated writers.
With informal lectures and class discussions, we will examine the following five works (in order of publication): Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Amsterdam by Ian McEwan, Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, and The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. (The public library has copies of each, or you can purchase them from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Thriftbooks or Abebooks.com.) Note: Please read Norwegian Wood for the first class. Class meets 9/15, 9/29, 10/20, 10/27 and 11/10.
