The novel by Erich Maria Remarque is a classic and the current film directed by Edward Berger is well acclaimed–and both are disturbing. This class includes a video and presentation on the “Great War,” discussion of the novel and its effects, viewing of the film (July 13 session will be 3 hours long to accommodate the film), and lastly comparative discussion of the novel and film with references to other film and literature and contemporary application. Note: Reading of novel is encouraged but not required.
