Description
Although you may have seen the Hitchcock films based on her works, many have not experienced the original spellbinding talent of this versatile author. Known for novels, short stories, biographies, and plays, du Maurier is an award-winning 20th-century icon. Her famous books include Frenchman’s Creek, The House on the Strand, The Glass-Blowers, and Castle Dor. Taylor Swift’s song “Tolerate It” was even inspired by du Maurier’s most famous novel, Rebecca. Using mini-lectures and seminar discussions we will examine a number of her works: Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, “Don’t Look Now” and “The Birds” (short stories), My Cousin Rachel, and The Scapegoat. (The public library has copies of each, or you can purchase them from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Thriftbooks or Abebooks.com) Note: Please Read Jamaica Inn for the first class. Class meets 9/23, 10/7, 10/21, 11/4 & 11/18.
