This class will review: the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ)-strong 8.5 quakes in 1811, the 7.6 1885 Charleston, South Carolina Earthquake, the 7.8 1906 San Francisco disaster, the 1960 9.2 Good Friday Alaska tremblor, the 2010 9.0 seismic event in Japan, Chile’s 9.5 quake in 1960, and the 2023 Turkey/Syria quake (circa 46,000+ deaths) along with other pertinent tremblors in recent years. Len’s study of earthquakes began in 1993 as a result of receiving a Sci-Mat Fellowship from NSF and the Dept. of Education allowing for NMSZ fieldwork in California, Chile, the Mediterranean, and Alaska.
