Description

This course will feature highlights in the evolution of Buddhist thought and practice from its beginnings in India (Gautama the Buddha active ca. 500 BCE), sectarian developments in India over the next 500 years, its moves into SE Asia (Theravada Buddhism) and the Far East (Mahayana Buddhism), and at least a nod in the direction of its move into the West over the last 100 years. Though more “popular” forms of Buddhism will be referenced, the focus will be normative (“classical”) traditions represented by monastic and scriptural forms of this most interesting religion.
