Description

Join us to explore the most remote, permanently inhabited place on Earth–Easter Island. It was the island’s isolation that developed its unique culture creating over 900 giant stone statues called Moai and its unique “Birdman Cult” that arose in the 18th century to govern the ten tribes of the Island. We will discuss the source and type of rock used to construct the Moai, how these giant statues were moved from the quarries to their platform, and how the statues were placed in their upright positions. Finally, what purpose did they serve, and what were the cultural and environmental conditions that finally dictated the rise and fall of Easter Island’s society?
