Description

Consider the National Park Service’s (NPS) mission statement: “To preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” This mission includes the conservation of our national heritage sites, both natural and cultural, and their protection from destructive overuse, vandalism, and urban encroachment. Also crucial is a scientific understanding of the processes of weathering and erosion, biologic development over time, ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as securing the necessary funding to maintain the pristine and natural splendor of our 433 official NPS sites (including 63 national parks). This discussion will survey several prominent national parks, challenges they are or may soon be experiencing, plus possible solutions to safeguard them for future generations.
