Description

Through film and film clips, this course will explore the basic story that is central to 1927’s The Jazz Singer. We’ll discuss the background behind the making of The Jazz Singer as it moved from short story to stage play and then to film. We’ll also examine the Yiddish and Polish stories and the German silent film that predate it. Finally, we will discuss the American and Yiddish remakes in an attempt to understand what it is about the story that made it so appealing to audiences across cultures and how the story changed over time and culture.
