Once Washington established the Presidency, his successors faced challenges brought about by a changing nation and the changing nature of American politics. Presidents found themselves facing conditions unimagined by the Founders. Some in the 19th Century intentionally expanded power, others resisted an expansion. Still others had redefinition forced on them. We will continue our look into the development of the Office of the President in these sessions.
