Description

Beyond the political, economic, cultural and philosophical influences in accepting or objecting to “American” wars, religious influences are a critical and often overlooked dimension. Ranging from pacifism to a crusading mentality, religious leaders used the Bible and other historical precedents to justify and motivate particular actions. Part I examines the early-mid 19th century conflicts with various religious movements of that era, and sets the stage for subsequent wars for a future course. PowerPoint lectures, videos and handouts will be used along with discussion to inform and stimulate opinions about these formative aspects of American history.
