Description

Of the myriad famous American novelists, several stand out for their memorable works. Contemporaries of each other, these authors are each noteworthy: their books deal with justice, loyalty, freedom, survival, discrimination, and identity. All are considered celebrated authors, winning the Pulitzer Prize, the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Foreign Drama Critics Award, and others.

With informal lectures and class discussions, we will examine the following works (in order of publication): Goodbye, Columbus by Philip Roth, Rabbit, Run by John Updike, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin, and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (from Different Seasons) by Stephen King. (The public library has copies of all, and they can be purchased from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Thriftbooks or Abeboks.com) Note: Please read Goodbye, Columbus for the first class. No class 9/25 & 10/9.
