Description

Of the myriad famous English novelists, several stand out for their memorable works. Contemporaries of each other, these authors are each noteworthy: their books deal with loyalty, betrayal, hypocrisy, pretension, and often are satirical and humorous. All are considered celebrated authors, winning the Booker Prize, the Somerset Maugham Award, or being recognized as among the fifty greatest British writers. With informal lectures and class discussions, we will examine the following books (in order of their publication): Loving by Henry Green, Under the Net by Iris Murdoch, Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark, and Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald. (The public library has a few copies of each, and they can be purchased from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Thriftbooks or Abebooks.com) Note: Please read Loving for the first class.
