The Enlightenment was an 18th century intellectual movement, developed mainly in France, Britain and Germany, which advocated Freedom, Democracy and Reason as the primary values of society. Predictably, these notions challenged many of the existing institutions at that time and gave rise to the counter-enlightenment movement of Romanticism. The proponents of these two movements, their fundamental beliefs and philosophy, as well as their historical and contemporary influences on society will be explored.
