Description

Billed as a sports comedy-drama, this award-winning 2002 UK film recounts the coming-of-age story of “Jess” Bhamra, the daughter of immigrant Indian Sikhs living in contemporary London. A high school senior, Jess is a good student bound for college, but her passion is “football,” aka soccer. While her strict traditionalist parents disapprove of her athletic pursuit, she’s noticed by Jules, who plays in an amateur women’s football league and invites her to try out for the local team. Their shared dreams unfold in an endearing, highly entertaining manner amid more serious issues of cultural and generational conflict, gender norms, social expectations, racism and discrimination, with several comic twists plus some fast-paced soccer action. Stars Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Archie Panjabi, with a David Beckham cameo.
