Description

Known for her many portraits, self-portraits and paintings inspired by the nature, artifacts and popular culture of Mexico, Frida Kahlo created paintings in her unique style, often incorporating autobiographical elements. Kahlo met her future husband, muralist Diego Rivera, and shortly thereafter began to develop imagery that attracted the attention of Surrealist Andre Breton, who in 1938, arranged for her first solo exhibition in NYC. Overshadowed by her husband’s artistic success, and plagued by fragile health issues, Kahlo remained fairly unknown as an artist in her own right until the 1970s. In the intervening years, Kahlo’s distinct colorful style has become well known.
