Description

These annual prizes are awarded by Columbia University for outstanding public service and achievement in American journalism, letters, and music. Originally endowed with a gift of $500,000 from newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer, they are highly esteemed and have been awarded each May since 1917. The recommendations are made by the judges appointed by Columbia. (Encyclopedia Britannica)

With informal lectures and class discussions, we will examine five Pulitzer Prize winners with a variety of styles and authors. In order of publication they are The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder, A Death in the Family by James Agee, Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler, A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer. (While the public library has copies, they can also be purchased from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Thriftbooks or Abebooks.com.) Note: Please read The Bridge of San Luis Rey for the first class.
