Description

This course will discuss possible meanings of these terms (in the course title) and offer examples of how these meanings are manifested in historical contexts (cf. “comparative religion”). The diversity of religion(s) and the religious across cultures and histories will be featured, as well as how contemporary “spiritualities” might be related to being religious in the 21st century. Another way to put it is that we will look at different ways or types of being religious across global contexts – seeing the bigger picture through a smaller lens. In the process, we hope the term “religion” can be understood in a much larger way than conventionally we understand it.
