Could Sherlock Holmes exist? One answer is found in the multiverse. It contains a large number of regions equal in size to our visible universe. These are effectively alternate universes with different histories. Anything not forbidden by physics, even Sherlock’s existence, might occur. Another approach involves conscious AI. In a simulated London, virtual Holmes and Watson solve virtual crimes. Is there sufficient data to reconstruct Victorian London? Could we create such a “matrix?” Are the inhabitants conscious?
