Description

Are cemeteries places you would normally avoid or fear? Would you ever consider walking through a cemetery just for the sheer enjoyment of the art and nature? Are graves something for the living to enjoy? This is a course that will change your perspective. Art, often of museum quality, is found in many cemeteries. This beauty often languishes unseen and unappreciated. The wonderful visual pleasures left by people from colonial times through the 21st century as they have decorated for their dead are the subject of this class. We will consider the cultural, social and practical influences that inform what you see in a cemetery. Although concertation will be on American cemeteries, we will explore memorial art from Italy, as well. Note: The final class will be a field tour to Oakwood Cemetery.
