Description

This presentation focuses on the Ste Marie Mission from its conception to its abandonment. The story includes the Iroquois Wars; the trade network involving the Dutch, French, and Native American nations that interacted with the New World colony of New France; and aspects of the Jesuit missionary diplomatic mission to the Onondaga canton of the Haudenosaunee Iroquois.  We will explore the site’s dual role as a mission embassy and the interface between French and Native cultures, then discuss events that led to imminent hostilities, the French escape plan, and the abandonment episode.  Finally, the class will examine the historical significance of the Ste Marie Mission.
