Winslow Homer is one of America’s foremost 19th century artists. Homer developed his artistic vision as a young graphic artist for Harper’s Weekly during the Civil War; from that experience he later went on to build his reputation as a painter of contemporary life. A frequent visitor to NY State’s Hudson Valley and Adirondack regions, Homer’s imagery reflected the changing trends in social life, as well as developing tourist destinations. During the 1880s, Homer became fascinated with the forces of nature, particularly the ocean, and continued to create dynamic paintings.
