Silent films offer us a rare opportunity to see what was then a new artform as it begins, grows, and develops before our very eyes. Starting with the first movies at the time of their invention, we’ll see this new medium begin to shape itself. We will watch films in each class and observe as they advance in the areas of technology, storytelling, artistic expression, entertainment, and persuasion. We’ll see Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Lilian Gish, and other stars of the silent era as we examine controversies, movements, pivotal figures, and exceptional films. Best of all…we’ll see many wonderful and important movies.
